Why is our farm called Panchamaveda?

"Panchamaveda is a traditional Vedic reference and is echoed in the great Indian epic, Mahabharata. The main source of knowledge about what we now call "Panchamaveda" / Pancha Bhoota refers to five elements dedicated to lord Shiva, each representing a manifestation of the five prime elements of nature: earth, water, fire, air, and ether(space).

At Panchamaveda, we make an effort to lead a natural lifestyle. But it's unfortunate that this organic and natural way of living now requires an authenticity certificate.

The main objective of Panchamaveda is to correct this deviation, inspire others to practise organic farming, and establish this way of life as the new standard."

Know About Our Farm And History

How it started….

"How it started…. Panchamaveda’s story started in 2012 when we moved away from the fast-paced and bustling city of Bengaluru to the rustic life at Panchamaveda to practise agriculture. Despite the challenges of moving away from a vibrant city like Bangalore to a small village, it was a firm decision.

Hence, we moved 250 kilometres away from the capital city of Karnataka. Panchamaveda is 250 kilometres from Bengaluru; 30 kms from Shivamogga and 33 kms away from Bhadra Dam.

Our farm is situated in Chikmagalur District, in a border village between Badhravathi and Tarikere taluks. Initially it indeed was challenging for us to shift and leave our political, social & business life behind at Bengaluru. But in order to achieve our goal, we knew it demanded a lot of hard work, dedication and sacrifices. That’s when we shifted to Panchamaveda with one aim; building an organic farm with a learning centre for those who are interested in an organic way of life and farming."

What does Panchamaveda do?

For years, our farm has been testing out sustainable farming methods. With regard to agricultural items like rice, ragi, oil, tamarind and turmeric, we have achieved self-sufficiency.

At Panchamaveda, more than 17 types of fruits are available perennially which we share with our avian friends who make themselves at home at Panchamaveda.

As a step towards natural and traditional farming, we have stopped using tractors for cultivation and we use only cattle as of now. Panchamaveda also generates its own kitchen fuel and electricity from solar and wind energy.

Our Experiments at Panchamaveda Farm :

Panchamaveda organic way of life is about living the natural way. We believe in growing food for self consumption as much as possible and rest to share with like-minded consumers. This is reflected in our non-commercial approach to agriculture. Only 30% of the 26 acres at Panchamaveda are reserved for arecanut which is a commercial crop. The Remaining 70% of our organic farm is reserved for various other food crop production and for cattle fodder. Our farm's land breakup ratio is as mentioned below;

  1. 30% land for arecanut and coconut

  2. 25% land for green grass fodder for cattle

  3. 10% for growing cereals such as ragi, paddy, etc

  4. 5% land for fruits cultivation

  5. 20% for man-made forest

  6. 10% for house and other infrastructures

At Panchamaveda we are self-sufficient with our kitchen fuel as the biogas produced in the dairy used by us at our homes for everyday kitchen use and also provide biogas facilities to our resident farm workers.

Complementing the basic philosophy of Panchamaveda, we strive to give back to earth what we take, with this principle in mind, all four borewells are recharged year-round.

Panchamaveda has even achieved self-sufficiency with food sweeteners with Neera jaggery. In association with Malenadu Farmers Producers Company, we arrived at an excellent idea to extract fresh Neera (0% Alcohol) from coconuts.

Neera by-products like NeeRaw jaggery will aid people suffering from diabetes and other health disorders while saving time & money - one less thing to worry about when looking after one’s health.
